Léo Diaz

they/them

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Originally trained as a biologist, Léo Diaz research interests expanded over time but have remained grounded in biology, with systems biology a large enough description to cover most. Léo completed a BSc in Biological Sciences and an MSc in Bioinformatics and Theoretical Systems Biology at Imperial College London, before moving to Melbourne to do a PhD, which was completed in 2023. Léo’s research has touched on network inference as well as graphs and hypergraphs in general, more recently has been interested in exploring the application of more mathematical areas to biology, such as category theory. The overarching theme of Léo’s research has developed to be about ideas of modelling and representation of the natural world using mathematics; Léo has been moving towards epistemology as a result, working at the intersection of mathematics and biology to think about what it means for mathematics to be applied.

When not at Uni, Léo will usually be at the club listening to music, at the cinema, or in the park reading.
